Oak Ridges Moraine Corridor Park Schools Planting

Moraine Tree PlantingInformation on this page is about the 2019 event.

Please check back for information about a potential 2024 event.

The 2019 student reforestation event in the Oak Ridges Moraine Corridor Park took place on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 (postponed from May 9 due to inclement weather forecast).

Many tree and shrub seedlings were planted across Old Colony Road from Bond Lake Public School.

The site is very close to Catfish Pond woods and many trillium and wildflowers were in bloom.

Planting was performed by about 400 York Region elementary and high school students, and students from several private schools.

Richmond Hill Garden & Horticultural Society members were invited to participate in the reforestation activities; or to just stop by to observe the planting in the afternoon.

Agenda:

  • 9:00 am to 11:00 am – Planting Leaders’ Training for high school students
  • 11:00 am to 12:30 pm – Elementary students arrive, Lunch, Raptor Show
  • 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm – Planting

2019 was the eleventh year for this event. In addition to our society’s financial contribution, major funding for this collaborative effort is provided via a successful application by the Richmond Hill Rotary Club to the Toronto Dominion Bank Friends of the Environment Foundation. Additional collaboration is provided by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, who manages the park, prepares the site and arranges lunch; Richmond Hill’s Urban Forestry section, who provides wood chip mulch for the planting; Urban Forest Associates, who manages the quality of the planting efforts and the safety of the participants; and the Mountsberg Conservation Centre, who puts on a fabulous raptor show.
